|1||Please provide a short description of the state-of-the-art and/or current trends in the field? How does the result fit into it?|
|The products related to the enhancement of image and video for investigative, forensic and security purposes are used mainly in two ways. The first way is as based on a stand-alone software installed on the user workstation, the second one is as a “service” provided by a company that owns the tools necessary for the processing and makes the job for the user.
In former case, the the processing is made using different tools sometimes not integrated in a well defined and self consistent application. This means, from a user viewpoint, that the processing activity requires more effort since it is necessary to know how to use several tools and manage partial results manually.
The latter case is, in many cases, not suitable since information contained in the images or videos may be confidential and the data processing driven directly by an investigator may result much more effective than a one performed by a third party.
Five belongs to the first category and works though the integrated dynamic (real time) combination of different tools. This makes the process of enhancing the images and the videos very usable, and then, more effective for people that may not be skilled image processing developers.
Starting from the current product baseline, the features to be added concern some issues as super-resolution, enhancement of images acquired from a long distance, enhancement of contrast, component separation (several images in the same “signal”), analog data acquisition and demultiplexing. That additions will contribute to make Five a very complete tool.
|2||What is the problem/need/knowledge gap that the research result is responding to? How was it addressed before?|
|The approach proposed by Five is exactly that: integrated, real time and in an “all in one” fashion. In fact, Five is a complete product which allows the user to work inside the same application to use different tools simultaneously and in real time (e.g. playing a video with no interruption). Usability, in this case, becomes great. In addition, to make usability even greater, the product is designed to support multilingual user interface. Eventually, the software is going to be also multi-platform to allow better integrated in some institutions/laboratories where e.g. MacOS systems are used.|
|3||What is the potential for further research?|
|Some special sectors of investigation has the need of enhancing audio signals or to check whether an image has been tampered or not. The new architecture of Five will allow the future integration of that features.|
|4||What is the proposed method of IPR-protection? (patent, license, trademark etc.)|
|Due to the current experience, the product is protected by a user license.|
|5||What are the steps that need to be taken in order to secure the IPR-protection? What is the cost of IPR-protection?|
|The protection is made by a pendrive which lockes the use of the software on a single machine where the key is installed. The cost are considered not relevant, standing this way to operate.|
|6||What is you overall assessment of the scientific maturity of the research result?|
|The R&D results considered are going to be integrated in a commercial product already on the market. Algorithms and techniques used by Five are mostly coming from scientific literature or from deeply validated codes publicly available.
Usually, in a forensic environment, the use of scientific validated algorithms is required because of the need for reliability, traceability, and transparency.
The innovation carried out by Five is the flexible and integrated combination of single algorithms with a special focus on usability (integration, real time configuration, multilingual, multiplatform, etc.).
In conclusion, given the origin of the core functions, the R&D results have a good level of maturity from a scientific viewpoint.
