The framework and prototype software system for Cloud Application Platform Governance were evaluated in the context of research project CAST (http://www.cast-project.eu), which co-funded their development.The evaluation included two phases: (1) the development of a prototype registry & repository system and its customization with respect to the specific artefacts and processes supported by the CAST cloud application platform, and (2) the testing of the prototype registry & repository system using two pilot applications (enterprise software applications), which were deployed to the CAST cloud application platform.

The framework and the prototype software system for Cloud Application Platform Governance were evaluated via two small-sized pilot applications from the domain of enterprise software applications, developed by a Greek and a German software company. The intent of the evaluation process was to demonstrate how the registry & repository system can support the administrators of the CAST platform with regard to quality assurance and lifecycle management for different applications.The results indicate that the developed framework and the prototype software system offers a comprehensive set of features that can help administrators maintain visibility over the software entities deployed on the platform, their interdependencies and their lifecycle states, the behavior of remotely deployed third-party Web services which may be used by locally-deployed applications, and ensure the validity of all entity-related artefacts with respect to various platform policies.

SECTION 2: Current Stage of Development

2a To what extent does the development team have technical resources for supporting the production of a new product[1]? (Researchers, human resources, hardware, etc. )
Note: Describe whether the R&D result is a result of collective effort and developers could be available for technical advice if the product is to be produced.
The framework and prototype system were developed within research project CAST (http://www.cast-project.eu), which was supported and co-funded by the EUREKA Eurostars programme. The project consortium comprised 4 partners from Germany and Greece. IPR for the particular R&D result (Framework and System for Cloud Application Platform Governance) is owned by the South-East European Research Centre. The development of the prototype software system relied heavily on the use of Open Source Software. Any further development can be supported by the research team from SEERC that was involved in the development of the system (Information and Knowledge Management research cluster).
2b What are the technical issues that need to be tackled for full deployment, if needed?

The discussed Framework and System for Cloud Application Platform Governance was developed with platform-independence in mind, without strong ties to a particular cloud platform technology or application domain. Therefore, it can theoretically be employed for supporting governance in conjunction with a variety of different cloud application platforms. For the time being, however, it has only been employed for governance in conjunction with the cloud application platform developed by the CAST project.The main issues to be tackled for full deployment are: 

(i) development of extensions to the existing software system to support the artefacts and processes of additional cloud application platforms,

(ii) deployment of the registry & repository software system to an industrial-strength cloud infrastructure to enable a software-as-a-service usage model.

2c What additional technical resources are needed for the production of this new product?

No other technical resources are envisaged apart from human resources for software development (developing the extensions), deployment, and maintenance of the resulting service.

The system is fully operational but has been evaluated in conjunction with a single cloud application platform to date. It needs to be evaluated in conjunction with several other platforms.

 

SECTION 3: Deployment

3a Define the demands for large scale production in terms of

The software system can be made available as a service over the internet (Software-as-a-Service model). To achieve this, there is a need for a suitable cloud computing infrastructure from a public cloud services provider, such as Amazon, GoGrid, RackSpace, etc.
  • Staff effort
Product development and support would require a team of specialised software engineers, an expert for marketing and PR, and a customer support specialist.

 

SECTION 4: Overall Assessment

4 What is you overall assessment of the technical feasibility of the research result?
Note:
The R&D result would require a substantial amount of effort in order to be extended such that its supports several different cloud application platforms, and in order to be deployed in the form of a Software-as-a-Service offering.
