IP protection




Please provide a short description of the state-of-the-art and/or current trends in the field? How does the result fit into it?
Hundreds of fishing knots are known nowadays. Most of them are widely used in practice. There are many tools and devices helping the fishermen tying the hooks. A typical example is shown below:

A handheld device is provided for aiding in attaching a fishing line to a fishing hook. The device includes a holder having a first end and a second end. At least one of the first end and the second end includes an opening through which the hook can be securely coupled. An end of the fishing line is inserted through the eye of the fishing hook to tie a fishing knot. The device can also include a fishing lure extending from at least one of the first end and the second end. The opening can be one of a slit, a groove, a slot, a hole, and a notch.

On the contrary the proposed method and tool helps tying the hook while manipulating the fiber around the hook, not the hook itself. The tied knot is even, distributing equally the forces along the knot and lowering the refraction of the line.





What is the problem/need/knowledge gap that the research result is responding to?  How was it addressed before?
In most cases tying the fishing hook is not an easy task to fulfill. Usually the fishing hook is too small to operate conveniently and the fiber is very thin. Even when the hook is tied already the knot very often does not correspond to the expectations of the fisher and is with low quality. The weak knots are the main reason for fiber breakage and lost catch.

The proposed method improves the chance for preparing a good knot. The researched tying tool successfully helps the fisherman and makes the tying much easier and faster.



What is the potential for further research?
Further research can be focused on automating the tying, based on the researched tool. The creator of the method for tying fishing hooks is interested in developing a mechanized device, which could autonomously fulfill the tying task, using the proposed method. The active tying part could have similar to the proposed tying device design.








What is the proposed method of IPR-protection? (patent, license, trademark etc.)
The internal research, held with the ESPANET patent search system, revealed worldwide granted patents and utility models for similar hand held tying devices and methods. Therefore the proposed IP protection could be as industrial design or as utility model, based on the differences in the construction, compared to the rivals. Besides this, the researcher could apply for granting an international trade mark.




What are the steps that need to be taken in order to secure the IPR-protection? What is the cost of IPR-protection?
In order to apply for IP protection in the means of utility model the company must prepare a description, clearly stating the differences and strong sides of its technical decision, compared to those of the competitors. It is advisable also to be filled an application for trade mark protection in the Bulgarian Patent Office. In case of positive development the company could receive an EC IP registration, which could be extended into worldwide one at the next stage.  The approximate costs for the first stage IP protection for the European union are 7000 EUR.



What is your overall assessment of the scientific maturity of the research result?
 The proposed method is useful and working. The fishing knot is self locking, with good characteristics, evenly spreading the forces along the fiber. The researched hand held tying tool successfully helps for hook tying, as well as spares time for completing the task. The process could be automated by a mechanized fishing hook tying device yet to be researched and developed.
