The halogenated flame retardants act by effectively removing the H+ and OH- radicals in the gas flame phase. This considerably slows or prevents the burning process, thus reducing heat generation and so the production of further gaseous flammable material.
Many of the halogenated flame retardants are classified as dangerous substances according to the European classification of dangerous substances in terms of their potential health risk for consumers. Some of them could form dioxins and furans during their production, processing and in case of fire or incineration and therefore are banned in the European Union
The task of this invention is to create a general composition of biodegradable halogen-free flame retardants, efficient for hydrophilic and hydrophobic polymers, such as fabrics, wood, leather, paper, cardboard, extruded and expanded penopolystirol, foamed polymers and items, made of them, irrespective of their physical and chemical properties and structure, while providing a wide range of the relevant application methods of the composition on materials, such as: impregnation in an autoclave with increased pressure, plasma-assisted impregnation, conveyor methods – soaking, draining and drying at high temperature, as well as energy-saving methods for on-site application in client’s premises, such as impregnation by dipping, pouring, brush application, roller application or by spraying at air pressure and room temperature.
The innovative flame retardants are applied for hydrophilic and hydrophobic porous polymers with different properties and structure.
The effectiveness of the products in terms of the flame retardant capacity is achieved by the synergistic effect of the phosphorus and nitrogen components in it. As a result the aesthetic qualities of the fire retardant treated materials are preserved – there are no slightly deposits of salts crystallization or residue on the surface of the polymer.
The flame retardant composition is effective in a small amount for impregnation of porous polymers.
The products are neutral and therefore non-corrosive and non-irritating in nature.
The neutral pH allows preservation stability, freezing stability and chemical stability of the flame retardant solution.
The composition is environmentally friendly and is fully safe in that the composition eliminates the generation of halogen gas upon combustion.
