Please provide a short description of the state-of-the-art and/or current trends in the field? How does the result fit into it?
The need to monitor the environment, to detect the status and trends of contamination by chemicals, potentially toxic, and possible sources of pollution, was recently brought to public attention (especially from the recent incident of the Central Fukushima nuclear). Considerable resources are used annually in the monitoring of various chemicals contaminated despite that show deficiencies transfer and integration of new scientific knowledge and programs for monitoring of ecosystems and food security (time dilated, overlapping responsibilities between different bodies, fragmentation of information). It therefore becomes necessary to update the methodologies for monitoring, in particular, need to outline approaches that could integrate different data sources, to allow a realistic assessment of overall exposure to certain groups of pollutants. It is crucial to the integration of environmental exposure data with epidemiological data on animal populations, wild and domestic, and humans. Or using predictive models that allow to predict the levels of contamination in a given matrix following a specific mathematical law.

2

What is the problem/need/knowledge gap that the research result is responding to?  How was it addressed before?
The project aims to exploit the potential of mathematical models integrated into a GIS (Geographic Information System) with the method of biomonitoring to create a network efficient and reliable monitoring of environmental quality and therefore the monitoring of contamination levels in food products in the town of Teramo.

3

What is the potential for further research?
The research will help to gain a main support to production systems, agro-food commodities in the province of Teramo.

4

What is the proposed method of IPR-protection? (patent, license, trademark etc.)

The protection of intellectual property rights is proposed for the product  ” Contamination by radionuclides, heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons: use the hive-bee in the preparation of risk maps of urban and suburban areas of the town of Teramo” by publications.

5

What are the steps that need to be taken in order to secure the IPR-protection? What is the cost of IPR-protection?
Presentation of the preliminary scientific results at national and international conferences; the costs is 5000 Euro

6

What is you overall assessment of the scientific maturity of the research result?
The search began about a year. Given its nature, the search result will mature in about two years.
