1 Please provide a short description of the state-of-the-art and/or current trends in the field? How does the result fit into it?
Light Emitting Diode (LED) technology is developing very fast. The state-of-the-art diodes are applicable for general illumination and lighting purposes. The future of LED applications in lighting is ensured by the size (nowadays this is the smallest light source available), the special mechanical (resistance to physical impacts like shake and push impulse), electrical and optical features, and the virtually unlimited lifespan, as well. The besides the high grade of reliability the tiny voltage operation reduces safety risk. Colored light can be produced without using filters, which would reduce the efficiency of illumination. Due to its electrical characteristics LED dimming and switching is easy to be controlled. In accordance with and based on the development of LED technology new possibilities have opened to the lighting industry. The technical features enabled designers and manufacturers to think freely in creative shapes and novel applications. This trend appeared in the last five years and continues in these days as well. The proposed concept utilizes the advantages of LED technology, LED illumination is a basic characteristic of the product. (In fact the concept would almost be the same with bulbs.) The application of high-power LEDs makes the product applicable not only as a mood light, but also for (functional) local illumination. Upon the build-up of the product it is obvious that the light is not directed, so only general illumination could be provided.

 

2 What is the problem/need/knowledge gap that the research result is responding to?  How was it addressed before?
The engine of the development was not the evolving of the LED technology though. In this sense the product was not technology driven as it might have been considered to be. The initial design problem was with light sources, that the light sources were designed to provide illumination, and mostly the state of light emitting (functioning) was taken into consideration in the design, and the “switched-off” state was considered as secondary. Meanwhile another force was driving the innovation; it has been observed, that the lighting products are mostly impossible to be personalized. “The neighbor can buy the same as I did.” This synergic, integrated thinking led the designer team to the presented concept.

 

3 What is the potential for further research?
A new design trend could be initiated with the proposed product. The technology is given, the former spot-like and line-like illumination sources could be substituted with planar or distributed homogeneous sources of light. Other interesting concepts could be emerging from the mission of designing light sources with high level of personalization possibilities. With the given concept a new product line could also be established.

 

4 What is the proposed method of IPR-protection? (patent, license, trademark etc.)
As the modular variable design is the main innovative feature, and the LED technology is only an application, the proposed method of IPR protection is design protection. The design protection grants legal protection for the appearance of a product. By means of this protection, the right holder can create or strengthen his position on the market. It is exclusively the right holder who can exploit the protected design or the person who has been licensed by him to do so (design license contract).

 

5 What are the steps that need to be taken in order to secure the IPR-protection? What is the cost of IPR-protection?
For the design protection no proof of functionality (e.g. a prototype) is necessary. To obtain a design protection  first a design application with the Hungarian Intellectual Property Office, or an international application under the Hague Agreement Concerning the International Deposit of Industrial Designs should be filed. The cost of design protection is approx. 400-1000 EUR, depending on the territories, plus prosecution. Previous consultancy is advised, because the R&D result has been formerly published.

 

6 What is you overall assessment of the scientific maturity of the research result?
The initial design problem and also the approach is original. Throughout the design process new possibilities of applications were identified. The number of possible variations of the modular lighting system is virtually unlimited. The composition has to be mounted on the wall; the design in any configuration remains interesting even when the light is turned off.
