Please provide a short description of the state-of-the-art and/or current trends in the field? How does the result fit into it?
Laparoscope techniques are used to an increasingly wide extent among surgical operation techniques, the essence of which is that the operations carried out within the body are performed with the help of manipulators taken to the target area within the body through small incisions. Simulator devices are used in order to learn and practice this surgical technique. Its essence is that it consists of a box – simulating the internal part of the body – on one side of which there is a mechanism suitable for inserting the laparoscope device. The solution may be seen in patent specification number US 2009176196.

The laparoscope surgery practicing device, progressing along the path presented above, makes better and more realistic simulation possible, therefore, it points completely in the direction of technical development. The mechanism used in the solution – serving for the insertion of the laparoscope device – as opposed to those known of is set up as a sensing and signal-transmission unit with the help of which numerous physical parameters can be measured and transmitted to a processing unit that make the surgical performance of the person practicing measurable and assessable. Such a device has not been known of to date.

What is the problem/need/knowledge gap that the research result is responding to?  How was it addressed before?
The deficiency of the known solution is that it is not suitable for performing an objective assessment of the real performance of the practicing person and, in a given case, for analysing it later on. This problem has not been solved to date.

What is the potential for further research?
When setting up the solution the creator also took into consideration for it to be possible to place life-like simulation elements into the box that are located in the body cavity and the same as the area to be operated on (organs, e.g. liver, section of bowels, etc.). A possibility for further development is to be able to replace these simulation units as quickly as possible and set them up as realistically as possible.

Other areas of further development include the perfection of the assessment and analysing part-unit, as well as the realisation of a portable version.

What is the proposed method of IPR-protection? (patent, license, trademark etc.)
The creator has an independent trademark application. A patent application should be urgently submitted with respect to the signal sensor and forwarding mechanism constituting important elements in the given solution and with respect to the simulation device established with them, as a medical technology device production and distribution company is showing great interest in the device, however, one condition of progress is the existence of an industrial rights protection application.

After the application has been submitted it will be possible to draw up the licence contract as well.

Within a specific period of time it will also be justified to start international procedures.

What are the steps that need to be taken in order to secure the IPR-protection? What is the cost of IPR-protection?
Submittal of a national patent application. Cost of application approx. HUF 300,000.

Initiation of international procedure with a PCT application, the cost of which is approx. HUF 1,000,000.

What is you overall assessment of the scientific maturity of the research result?
The solution rests on an expressly ingenious technical base. Making numerous, easily measurable physical parameters (operation duration, the duration of the surgical instrument within the designated operation area and outside of it, the length of the path taken by the surgical instrument) measurable and assessable provides great help not only in learning this surgical technique but also in providing an objective assessment of the performance of experienced operators. The results of individual simulated operations can be stored, so the solution also provides the opportunity for the development of a given person to be tracked and assessed.

Furthermore, it also makes it possible for an operation that is to be actually carried out to be completely realistically simulated, which will greatly assist in the operation being performed successfully.
