Three models were made according to the results of the tests. Now a prototype is available.

There were several tests by university students and surgeons as well and the results are satisfactory.

 

1b. Please describe and discuss the testing results
Before the test the surgeon has to plan the entire procedure. The equipment records the motion of the laparoscope in time and in space. The calculation and evaluation made by the device in real time. Its resolution is about 2 mm-s.

Further tests are necessary to elaborate new measuring methods with the equipment. It will increase the usability.

SECTION 2: Current Stage of Development

To what extent does the development team have technical resources for supporting the production of a new product? (Researchers, human resources, hardware, etc. )
The design and the technology was planned by the project owner P.B.

Rapid prototyping by CNC machine was used at the Central Research Institute for Physics. This background is available for a smaller serial production too.

What are the technical issues that need to be tackled for full deployment, if needed?
Regarding the relatively small market, a small workshop with universal technologies is required. (i.e.: CNC milling machine and lathe).

Tasks to b solved:

  • increase the accuracy of the measuring system
  • fine tune the measuring software
  • optimize the hardware (replacing the DAQ card with FPGA)
  • start the patent process
  • reposition the surgical ports (if necessary)
  • building a database of learning curves to create an objective base for the score system

What additional technical resources are needed for the production of this new product?
It is highly depend from the size of the market. The project owner do not think about establishing a company for production, marketing and sales, instead he prefers an existing company who would take over the production and the other tasks. But he can imagine to produce a small amount from the device to introduce it in different markets, just to obtain better position for the negotiations with potential manufacturers.

 

2d

Overall assessment of the current stage of technical development.
The current stage is good enough to start a more serious marketing and investment activity or to sell the invention for a potential manufacturer. As we learned from the patent observation such a device has not been known now, therefore it would be very important to accelerate the project in one or the other ways.

 

SECTION 3: Deployment

Define the demands for large scale production in terms of

The project owner is thinking about the previously described small scale production. Therefore the calculation of cost of deployment based upon the cost of the manufactured two prototypes. It was less then  HUF 800.000  ( € 3000).

SECTION 4: Overall Assessment

What is you overall assessment of the technical feasibility of the research result?
The research result is very promising. Usable and marketable prototypes were made and some negotiations with potential license buyer have begun. Regarding the fact that there are some similar artificial abdomen simulators in the market, but those are not able to measure the quality of the manipulation of the surgeon, this MENTOR has a good market potential for medical universities and even for larger hospitals too. This project is feasible.
