1 Please provide a short description of the state-of-the-art and/or current trends in the field? How does the result fit into it?
The area of Magneto-Therapy method is well developed and its products are well used in the high developed countries as Germany, Russia, Japan, England, and Hungary. The current trends are to apply Magneto-Therapy method jointly with mineral water, electrotherapy, laser-therapy, etc.

The presented product, MTS, is on the highest research level in Bulgaria – according to the patent.

The developer has a lot of articles in magazines in Bulgaria and abroad.

A regular international scientific conference “Communication, Electromagnetics an Medical Application” is organized and held in Bulgaria every year by developers.

2 What is the problem/need/knowledge gap that the research result is responding to?  How was it addressed before?
The Magneto-Therapy method is old and came from China. In the beginning of the method implementation permanent magnets were used, but the effect of magneto-therapy is much better and successful in the case of application of low frequency magnetic field.

Thus the usage of permanent magnets is developed further and improved  by the usage of frequency magnetic field.

In Bulgaria this area is developing by the joint researcher team form Technical University-Sofia and Medical Universities of Sofia under the leadership of Prof. D. Dimitrov (TUS). Only small series of units of the MTS, produced by the development team, are used in Bulgarian hospitals.

3 What is the potential for further research?
Further research on implementation of frequency magnetic field method is quite promising and it will come with the ideas of the physicians in practice.

When the physicians acquire with the product and see the visualization of the space-temporal configuration of low-f frequency magnetic field, they understand the process better and have new ideas for its implementation for treatment of different diseases.  The visualization of the magnetic field is very useful for the physicians and allows them to control the intensity of the field and to obtain better therapeutic effect.

4 What is the potential of the research result for synergy with other research areas either in the same or in a different discipline?
The investigations on medical application of permanent and low frequency magnetic field are interdisciplinary.

It is connected with biology, physics, electrical engineering, IT.

5 What is the proposed method of IPR-protection? (patent, license, trademark etc.)
The developer has national patent.
6 What are the steps that need to be taken in order to secure the IPR-protection? What is the cost of IPR-protection?
To protect the IPR is it needed to pay yearly taxes. At national level it is approximately 300€ per year patent tax, and at the international level – about 600€ per year patent tax. It’s depends to the country.
7 What is the expected impact of the research result? (industry, society, administration etc. and target groups of beneficiaries)
The expected impact of the product is very big:

-          The social effect is very high because the systems for magneto-therapy can be used easy not only in hospitals , but also at home by ordinary people, by general purpose practitioners (medical doctors) visiting sick patients for a lot of diseases as : pulmonal , cardio-vascular, surgical, orthopedics and thraumatologic diseases, in stomatology, etc. The procedures of magneto-therapy are very cheap.

-          For the industry it is development of one actual area with potential for big series of production because of user friendly application of the system for magneto-therapy and because of its high effect of therapy for many diseases.

8 What is you overall assessment of the scientific maturity of the research result?
The product is enough mature. It was produced in small series and it’s used successfully  in many hospitals and by general purpose practitioners.
