Alpha/BETA testing: The system has been already tested (Alpha testing) using test multimedia databases, which consist of a few thousands of multimedia objects. Further testing is already planned.
1b. Please describe and discuss the testing results
Search and retrieval of multimedia objects (3D objects, images and sounds) achieves high accuracy: a considerable number of relevant media are retrieved using different multimodal queries.The retrieval time is quite low, when searching in a dataset of a few thousands of media. Current work focuses on improving the retrieval time in order to achieve fast retrieval even in large-scale.

Further testing needs will be defined on a specific (case by case) cooperation basis.Indicative cases:

SECTION 2: Current Stage of Development

 

2a To what extent does the development team have technical resources for supporting the production of a new product? (Researchers, human resources, hardware, etc.)
In terms of human resources, the group of Visual Computing Lab (VCL) of ITI is led by a researcher grade C with high experience in media search engines. Moreover, the VCL group has more than 15 experienced MSc researchers, PhD researchers and software developers, able to support the production of the new product.In terms of hardware, for software development, the existing equipment of VCL is sufficient.
2b What are the technical issues that need to be tackled for full deployment, if needed?
-          Support of all available media file formats (e.g. jpeg, gif, png, etc. for images, 3DS, WRL, OBJ, collada for 3D objects, etc.).-          User interface should be adaptive to a variety of end-user devices (PCs, laptops, palmtops, smartphones).
2c What additional technical resources are needed for the production of this new product?
The development team would need the following additional resources for deploying the proposed multimedia search engine in large-scale:-          A cluster of 3-5 high performance PCs with up to 100 TB HDs with fast access and data protection but it depends on the content.
2d Overall assessment of the current stage of technical development.
Currently, the technical development is in good progress. Work is now focused on improvement of the search engine’s response time, creation of interfaces for a variety of end-user devices and support of various media file formats.

  

SECTION 3: Deployment

 

3a Define the demands for large scale production in terms of

All the demands of a large scale distributed application.
  • technologies, tools, machineries
A cluster of 3-5 high performance PCs with up to 100 TB HDs with fast access and data protection but it depends on the content.
  • Staff effort
24 person months (experienced researcher). Compensation of the human effort of 1-2 experienced researchers (MSc or PhD) for guiding the deployment and conducting further research.24 person months (experienced developer). Compensation of the human effort of 1-2 experienced developers.

  

SECTION 4: Overall Assessment

1 What is you overall assessment of the technical feasibility of the research result?
Search engines able to perform text-based retrieval in large scale are already available. A fully multimodal media search engine does not exist so far; however, the technology is now mature enough to support the creation of such a search engine.
