CETMA conducts applied research and experimental development enhancing and integrating disciplines and enabling pervasive. The intention of the project PROGIMM is to introduce in the processes of the use of a CAD design immersive and COOPERATIVE, in which the man-machine interaction takes place in a more natural and immediate way, through the use of devices of tracking, feedback force and advanced visualization, overcoming all the limitations of display and interaction interfaces presented by classic hardware / software.
Everything has been studied by means of a software prototype installed in the unit of CETMA design and engineering sectors of the project partners.


Please describe and discuss the testing results

The result of this of this innovative project consists of an immersive CAD destined to different hardware configurations: the configuration FULL (which includes the use of advanced visualization centres as centres of virtual reality) to the configuration LIGHT (intended for design studies).

Both configurations feature:

  • Hardware architectures for tracking and stereoscopic viewing;
  • Collaboration module, able to work together in real time, on the same CAD designs, configurations and different users are geographically distributed.

In this way the designers-users, even if geographically distributed, may be virtually projected within a single simulated world, in which the interaction with the scenario takes place in virtual mode multisensory (sight, touch, hearing),thus more direct and natural.

SECTION 2: Current Stage of Development


To what extent does the development team have technical resources for supporting the production of a new product? (Researchers, human resources, hardware, etc.)

The project PROGIMM the involvement of partnership including the reality of profile qualities which the Consortium CETMA, ELASIS, FERRARI and THINK3. PROGIMM stems from the design based on the product development cycle (in general), proposing the development of software and hardware products and technologies (aimed at DESIGN immersive) and a distributed platform, integrating the potential of Advanced Visualization Centers with resources GRID-type calculation. The project saw the participation of many human resources, consisting of technicians, programmers, computer designers, engineers, developers, and leaders in the production of software, hardware and computer components.


What are the technical issues that need to be tackled for full deployment, if needed?

The current market has stabilized to a type of products in which the traditional interfaces dominate the design of the CAD world. In light of new technological trends PROGIMM aims to sensitize the market to accept new types of man-machine interface by providing a new mode of the digital design process, based on the integration of Virtual Reality, Partially or Totally Immersive Systems, CAD Engine (incumbent), tracking devices and / orthotic devices.
Currently the design team has all the tools necessary for further development, manufacture and marketing of the product.


What additional technical resources are needed for the production of this new product?

Currently the design team is composed by a team of high level, with all the equipment necessary for the development, testing and marketing of the product.


Overall assessment of the current stage of technical development.

The project was funded and  completed last  Aug. 31, 2011. The system hardware / software required by the project is adaptable to different architectural solutions, passing from one configuration to light, able to satisfy the requirements of technical studies design small-medium, to a full configuration for the parameters of the research centres of medium large-supplied with the appropriate hardware technologies of calculation, interaction and immersive visualization offering a widespread opportunity for its use.

The project saw the participation of many human resources, consisting of technicians, programmers, computer designers, engineers, developers, and and leaders in the production of software, hardware and computer components.

SECTION 4: Overall Assessment


What is you overall assessment of the technical feasibility of the research result?

This is a project funded, developed and tested with the objective of creating” a tool that revolutions modes of interaction between user-designer and the CAD world, no longer based on the use of traditional devices (such as mouse, keyboard, monitor and 2d windows), thus allowing greater participation (also emotive / emotional) through the use of new processes / methods closer to human gestures than translated, by force, from traditional interfaces. This is therefore a tool that will revolutionize the field of digital technology and virtual, designed to spread not only unique but global market.
