Technical feasibility

SECTION I: Testing

1

Has the R & D result been tested?

YES

NO

X

The following question is replied according to the reply in question 1

If yes

1a

In what mode has the result been tested?

•             Prototype

•             Pilot Application

•             Alpha/BETA testing

1b. Please describe and discuss the testing results

If no:

1c

Describe what type of testing does the R&D result need?
Detailed comment: The innovation is an idea, how to make an inexpensive and trusted device for helping the navigation of blind people. The solution of the project owner is an equipment with two video cameras, a special computer program and a device, containing a pin system (pin matrix) for spatial sensing via touch sensing. Some experiments were made, but only in the field of technical solution of the linear actuator and control. The most important biological testing of skin perception “with a matrix, with hundred of spikes” is missing.

Some of the experiments and tests which are necessary to evaluate the usability of the idea:

  1. Required resolution of the pin matrix (space and time) on skin
  2. What kind of image is formed by the pressure of pins
  3. Sensitivity of the entire system

It requires a complete model of the system, because there is a double transformation: Transforming from a real picture to the motion of pin-matrix, and then transforming from the perception by skin of the motion of the pin-matrix, to the “visualization” by the mind.

1d. What is the time needed for testing?
The estimation is about 1 year
1e. What is the cost needed for testing?
500.000 – 1.000.000 HUF  according to the estimation of the project owner.

SECTION 2: Current Stage of Development

2a

To what extent does the development team have technical resources for supporting the production of a new product? (Researchers, human resources, hardware, etc. )
There is no adequate technical background.

2b

What are the technical issues that need to be tackled for full deployment, if needed?
Small laboratory workshop required for modeling and biotechnological laboratory background for the tests.

2c

What additional technical resources are needed for the production of this new product?
At the present stage of innovation it is too early to predict the required technical resources for the production.

2d

Overall assessment of the current stage of technical development.
Detailed comment

The idea contains well known solutions for the parts of the system, but it was never approved that this double transformation is working.

SECTION 3: Deployment

3a

Define the demands for large scale production in terms of
  • Materials
Unknown

  • technologies, tools, machineries

  • Staff effort

SECTION 4: Overall Assessment

1

What is you overall assessment of the technical feasibility of the research result?
If the biotechnological tests approved the feasibility of the idea, a device can be developed using the idea of the project.

KEYWORDS QUANTITATIVE ASSESSMENT (0-5).

Please put X as appropriate. 1 2 3 4 5
Adequacy of testing activity undertaken so far   x
Adequacy and availability of technical resources of the development team   x
