Technical feasibility

SECTION I: Testing

1 Has the R & D result been tested?
Yes

1a In what mode has the result been tested?•           Prototype•           Pilot Application•           Alpha/BETA testing
The result has been tested in pilot study of 150 users (100 users in Athens and 50 in Thessaloniki)
1b. Please describe and discuss the testing results
Smarteyes had excellent results in guiding people with hard of vision. However, because the last tests took place on 2006, Smarteyes needs to be updated with current technologies in order to provide even better use value.

SECTION 2: Current Stage of Development

2a To what extent does the development team have technical resources for supporting the production of a new product? (Researchers, human resources, hardware, etc. )
The R&D result is a result of collective effort and developers are available both for employment as well as for technical advice and support if the product is to be produced.

2b What are the technical issues that need to be tackled for full deployment, if needed?
Smarteyes needs to be updated with current technologies. It can be enriched with a digital compass, an RFID system for navigation in close spaces and places, museums and archeological sights, and a Wifi system for navigation in places where the GPS doesn’t work.

2c What additional technical resources are needed for the production of this new product?
The additional technical resources needed are voice recognition software licenses.

2d Overall assessment of the current stage of technical development.
The R&D result has the basis for becoming an excellent product for every person around the world with hard of vision.

 SECTION 3: Deployment

3a Define the demands for large scale production in terms of
  • Materials
  • technologies, tools, machineries
  • Staff effort
Large scale production of the product requires:

  • Mobile phones with Windows 7 or Pocket PCs – this can be owned by the user
  • SIM Cards
  • Digital maps for the GPS from companies that produce GIS systems
  • Software licenses for Voice Recognition
  • RFID Readers for the full version
  • Staff effort: Translation of the software in other languages, as Spanish and English

SECTION 4: Overall Assessment

4 What is your overall assessment of the technical feasibility of the research result?
The R&D result, if it is updated with the current technologies, it has the potential for becoming an excellent product for every person around the world with hard of vision.
